If your pet requires a procedure outside the scope of our practice, we will coordinate referral care to ensure continuity and the best possible outcome.

Preparing Your Pet for Surgery

Dogs & Cats

• • Please withhold food after 9:00 pm the night before surgery
  • Fresh water may be available until the morning of the procedure

Exotic Pets

Exotic pets have different nutritional and metabolic needs. Feeding and preparation instructions vary by species, and our team will provide specific guidance prior to surgery.

If you have questions about how to prepare your pet, we encourage you to contact us ahead of time.

The Day of Surgery

Surgical patients are typically checked in between 7:00 am and 9:00 am on the morning of their procedure. During check-in:

• • A veterinarian will perform a pre-surgical exam
  • Any remaining questions will be answered
  • Consent forms and estimates will be reviewed

In some cases, overnight drop-off the evening before surgery may be arranged.

Anesthesia & Monitoring

Your pet’s safety under anesthesia is one of our highest priorities. During surgery, your pet is continuously monitored by trained veterinary technicians using:

• • Heart and respiratory monitors
  • Pulse oximetry
  • Blood pressure measurement
  • Temperature monitoring

Intravenous access allows us to administer medications quickly and adjust anesthesia as needed throughout the procedure.

Pre-Surgical Blood Work

Pre-surgical blood testing is required for pets undergoing anesthesia, and is especially important for pets over five years of age.

Blood work helps us:

• • Detect hidden illness
  • Assess liver and kidney function
  • Identify anemia, infection, or electrolyte imbalances
  • Choose the safest anesthetic medications for your pet

These tests allow us to minimize anesthetic risk and tailor care to your pet’s individual health profile.

After Surgery & Recovery

Most pets go home the same day as surgery. At discharge, a member of our team will review:

• • Post-operative care instructions
  • Pain medications and antibiotics (if prescribed) ADD: info on pain management
  • Feeding and activity restrictions
  • Incision care and monitoring

It is normal for pets to be slightly groggy after anesthesia. We recommend:

• • Keeping your pet indoors in a quiet, warm environment
  • Preventing licking or chewing at the incision (a cone may be required)
  • Monitoring the incision for redness, swelling, or discharge
  • ContactContacting us if you notice any concerning changes

Follow-up visits or suture removal will be scheduled as needed.
